[LET'S GET TO KNOW] Your Guide to Asian Dramas: Genres and How it All Started (Korean Edition)

Let's get to know Asian drama genres

There are many genres in dramaland....almost too many!

From romance comedies to psychological melodramas to chinese vuxia to korean sageuk's to action thrillers to...yeah....there's a lot ._. I think I finally understand what my friend, who got me into Asian dramas meant when she said "Once you're in, you can't get out". I don't think you can ever truly get tired of "dramas", sure you can feel like a genre follows the same pattern or some plots are very similar to one another, but if that's so then all you need to do is switch genres or why not switch the drama country + genre? That's a double combo, right?
To say "asian dramas are all the same" makes you, in my opinion, seem a bit closeminded, but hopefully, after this blogpost you might get a bigger picture of what asian dramaland has to offer. Now, to say that most romance comedies are about "a rich guy falling for a poor girl", however, could be more accurate than the previous statement, but it's still not quite true, because in the recent years there has been quite a lot of refreshing plots that only partly or not at all, overlap with the "rich guy falling for poor girl" concept.
With that said, the point of this post (actually this entire blog) is to introduce both new and old drama fans to new dramas, or to be more precise, new genres! Because there's just so much to explore in dramaland that it's pretty much impossible to say that you've already seen it all.
Before I start the post I just want to say that this will just be about korean dramas, because I feel like there's a lot to talk about. I'll also recommend dramas from every genre as I go through them, however, it's important to know that the dramas I recommend AREN'T the only ones out there, the handful of titles I'll present can perhaps be a good introduction to the genres but feel free to use mydramalist to find other dramas too :) I'll also try to keep the text as orgazined as possible, even though it's very difficult to stick to one genre without comparing it or mentioning another one. So yeah, without further ado, let's get started ~

[NEWS] Korean Remake of Chinese Hit Drama 'Scarlet Heart ' is in the Making!

New High Budget TimeTraveling drama to hit Kdramaland!

Official Poster of the Chinese Classic
Scarlet Heart from 2011

That's right guys! Chinese Classic Scarlet Heart is getting a Korean remake! From China to Japan, from South Korea to Taiwan, and so on, remakes are happening left and right but who can complain? Great stories are great stories! This time, the situation is even better since Hollywood's Universal Studios has been reported to have invested a lot of money into the production of this upcoming Korean Drama. This is quite unusual but with the popularity of kdrama My love From Another Star it seems like Hollywood has taken an interest in the Asian drama world. Worry not, they've just invested money into the project, but the production will be in the exellent hands of director Kim Kyu Tae, who directed the dramas 'It's Okay, That's Love, IRIS and That Winter the Wind Blows. It's epic isn't it? And the budget has been estimated to be almost 13 million US dollars! Woah, high quality drama indeed!

For those of you who are not familiar with Scarlet Heart (Also known as 'Startling By Each Step' or Bu Bu Jing Xin), It's a timetraveling historical drama about a woman from the 21st century who due to unexplainable turn of events ends up traveling back in time to the Qing Dynasty China, where she gets involved in the royal palace political and romance intrigues. The Korean remake is said to take place in the Joseon era but nothing else about the plot has been revealed. The drama will be named Moon Lovers, also reported as Lovers of the Moon and is set to start filming sometime next year.

Ahhh ~ a new time traveling historical drama :'3 I'm a sucker for those. Are you guys excited? Have you seen 'Scarlet Heart'? I have, and it was pretty good, I think my biggest issue with that one was the budget or what seemed like a low budget production, so I'm very happy that the story, which was quite interesting, is now getting a high budget remake! Also, do you have a dreamcast in mind? I'm kind of hoping that someone cute like Baek Jin Hee or Park Shin Hye gets cast as the female lead. I think, unless they change the character, they would fit the role pretty well ^^

Updates and Announcements from Omodramaland!

You said it Boromir!

Just thought I should do a quick announcement/update for you guys to see what will happen on this blog in the couple of weeks to come ~
Some of you may wonder why I haven't started the recaps of D-Day yet, and that's because I haven't been able to find the first episodes with english sub. I've checked all my drama websites daily and it wasn't until a few hours ago that I saw that episode 1 had been subbed -.-* It usually doesn't take this long but okay. Just wanted to have that written down so you don't think it's because I'm lazy or anything. If I promise to do something I'll do it! >_<
Same goes for Webtoon Hero: Toondra show. I don't know if it's because it's a webdrama or because it's not as popular as other dramas, but subs have been veeeeery slow with that one. I've found raw episodes and I've tried to translate it, but my korean is still lacking and so I'm afraid of posting a wrongly translated recap to you guys X_x therefore I've decided to wait for episode 4 and onwards to be subbed and then post the recaps. How long that may take, I don't know, but let's be patient nee? xD I'm currently working on Shut Up Flower Boy Band, but since I'll have to put more focus on being uptodate with D-Day, SUFBB will have to be put aside for the time being. I hope that's okay :/
I'm also currently marathoning Oh My Ghost so you can expect a review of that drama in the very near future xP I think I watched like 6 episodes yesterday...it's addicting as hell ._. ain't that right Boromir? xD Haha

The bit sad announcement is that I have an exam week coming up in the middle of October so I'll be going on a small hiatus from next week onwards :s It means I won't be posting anything on this blog but I will be writing posts, so you'll get tons of goodies as soon as my exams end so look forward to that! :D

Spooky and creepy ~ Achiara doesn't seem like the coziest and calmest place in South Korea. let's hope Moon Geun Young's character doesn't regret applying for that job at the school when weird things start happening ._. Yook Sung Jae, playing the poor policeman in the town surely doesn't have time to take coffee breaks either. What do you guys think? Are you ready to see the myserious incidents be upwrapped and hopefully solved in the haunted town Achiara? :)

[LETS GET TO KNOW] My Favorite Idol-Actors/Idol Turned Actors PART 1

Idol actors: idol turned actors who somtimes even give 'professional' actors a run for the money

As a first 'Let's get to know' segment on this blog, I decided to do something fun. Like an intro to not one but a handful of actors that I think people should look up and perhaps even follow. Since I have 8 actors/actresses to go through I'll do this in two parts! Please enjoy ~

First off, let's start by clearing out the term shall we? The kdrama term 'Idol actor' basically means that the actor or actress originally started off as an idol (usually kpop artist) before starting an acting debut and/or turning to acting as a full time job. There is a lot of critisism against idol turned actors as they're said to be very lacking and sometimes refered to as "just a pretty face" to promote a drama or movie, however there are some idols who are born with a natural talent for acting. In this blog post I'll go through some of the idol turned actors that I personally think are very talented. With that said, remember that this is my list, aka my opinion which may or may not be different from yours, and with that said, your idol actors may not be on this list. If you disagree with my opinion, feel free to post a comment below, I'd love to hear who you'd pick to be on the list, but also I expect you to respect my opinion. I can also say that none of the people mentioned in this post are my bias from their groups, so i'm judging them based on acting talent only. I can mention their singing or dancing talents as a side-thing, but the main point that I'm looking at is how well they can act. With that said, let's get started shall we? :D

[NEWS] Main Leads from 'She Was Pretty' Show Off Their Stylish and Sexy Looks for 'Cosmopolitan'

Main leads from She Was Pretty are too hot to handle

Did someone turn up the heat in here? No, it's the leads of the currently airing drama She Was Pretty who are mesmerizing us with their stylish and sexy looks for the October issue of fashion magazine Cosmopolitan. They bring out their inner passion and chemisty as they pose both individually and in couple pictures ~

Park Seo Joon, Hwang Jung Eum, Choi Si Won and Go Jun Hee. Ulala ~ aren't they just breathtaking? I especially love the last picture with Siwon and Hwang Jung Eum, careful, Park Seo Joon, Siwon might take the girl from you hehehe. Their chemistry (in the photoshoot) was just flawless xP But to see who will end up with whom, we'll have to watch the drama guys! Not that we're complaining right? xP 16 hours with these gorgeous and talented people? No joke, it'll be awesome. From what I've read on Mydramalist, people who've already watched the first episode, that aired yesterday, say they're already head over heels in love. It's If that's true, then the drama is definitely heading in a very promising direction.
I'll also start it soon, I'm even considering writing a first impression post, if you'd like that. Do let me know in a comment below!

Have you already started watching the drama? Do you like it? What do you think of the characters?

[NEWS] Still Cuts from Upcoming Drama 'Reply 1988' Revealed!

Enter: New Reply-Series title. 80's Fashion has never looked better!

We can slowly start the countdown since it's only a little bit more than a month left until the "Reply-series" starts airing their latest drama Reply 1988. As we all know, the previous 'Reply' dramas were very spot-on with the fashion, technology and pop culture references for the specific set time-periods, and seeing the still cuts for 1988, it doesn't seem like the producers have lost their touch.

Oversized shirts, short hair and baggy pants. Doesn't it look like we've traveled back in time? Now, I'm not an 80's kid, and I'm not living in South Korea, but I trust the producers and since korean fans gave the still cuts nothing but praise, it's safe to assure that this looks pretty damn awesome. Starring Girls' Day's Hyeri, Park Bo Geum, Go Kyung Pyo and many many more, the very anticipated drama is set to start airing October 23th.

Have you seen the previous titles in the Reply-series? Are you excited for this one? Send a comment below, and let me know ~ :3

[NEWS] Wu Yi Fan is a Cold Gangster Leader in Trailer for 'Mr. Six'

Wu Yi Fan's (Kris) New Chinese Movie

Starring Feng Xiaogang, Zhang Hanyu, Li Yifeng, Xu Qing and Wu Yi Fan, Mr. Six is an upcoming Chinese action comedy film.

Mr. Six tells the story of an old 50-something-year-old street punk called “Lao Pao Er” who has reigned over the Beijing streets as the neighbourhood kingpin for many years. One day, when his mischievous son causes a dispute against a much younger drag-racing street gang leader, he steps up to help defend him. “Lao Pao Er” then discovers that the younger generation of gang members have already named this drag racer as his successor, and he no longer holds any ground in the street scene
- Wikipedia

Earlier today, the very anticipated trailer for the movie got released. You can check it out down below:

Fast cars, gangs, Wu Yi Fan's plantium-blonde hair voila ~ the trailer looks quite cool. I'm a sucker for gangser action movies so I'll probably check this one out if I can find it subbed somewhere. However, I have to admit (and I hope no fans will go berserk, remember, this is purely my opinion) that I found Wu Yi Fan's acting (in the trailer alone) a bit stiff. He didn't really show a lot of emotions, but perhaps that's how his character is supposed to be? So I won't say he did a bad job since I'm not a person to give a final verdict just from a trailer alone, but I just felt like it was worth mentioning because I tend to always just point out good stuff xD Like I said, I will check out the movie if I can find it subbed somewhere, and if I watch it, I promise I'll give you my final opinion on both the plot and his acting because I'm quite curious to see if the movie itself will change my mind. I do think that a trailer needs to serve as a good first impression for a movie. Now, of course if his character is supposed to be a bit emotionless then fine. We shall see, I'm not going to judge just yet.

What do you guys think? Is this movie on to your 'to-watch'-list? :)

[NEWS] Yang Mi and Lu Han's Movie 'The Witness' Releases Trailer

Upcoming Chinese Movie with Lu Han and Yang Mi

Starring famous chinese actress Yang Mi and Singer-actor Lu Han, The Witness will be the chinese remake of a korean thriller movie named Blind. The movie will revolve around a blind girl and young boy who accidentally become the witnesses of a rainy night kidnapping, however, their testimonies are entirely contradictory. But despite that, the two witnesses collaborate to hunt down the murderer. In addition to the character, Lu Han had to go through intensive training to learn how to roller skate as it is an ability that his character will use a lot. Yang Mi on the other hand also had her share of difficulties as she tackled to get into the character of playing a blind girl. But despite all that, it seems from the trailer that their hard work might've paid off. Personally, I think this movie, looks very interesting + I'm a fan of Yang Mi since way back so there is no way I'm going to miss out on this one xD  For those of you who are also excited for this movie, it is set to be released on October 30th.

[NEWS] Stillcuts from Upcoming Korean Drama 'Six Flying Dragons' Revealed!

More Information about 'Six Flying Dragons'

While some of us are still mind-blown by the epic trailer that was released a while ago, SBS gives us no time to breathe as they now released glorious stillcuts from their upcoming historical drama Six Flying Dragons. Judging from the High Quality pictures, the production budget is no joke, and we we can expect nothing but great things from this drama!

Stillcuts show Yoon Kyun Sang playing the warror Mu Hyul who will later become Joseon's best swordsman and head of the King's guard.

Byun Yo Han will be playing another warrior, but who is on the opposite side, and will be protecting the political foe of King Taejong.

Shin Se Kyung will be playing the sister of Byun Yo Han as well as the love interest of King Taejong (oh the bittersweet romance ~ I guess we can expect a heartbreaking love story in this one)
It has also been reported that her character is a fictional one, whereas the majority of the main cast are actual historial figures.

As for King Taejong (Yoo Ah In), he's been the center of talk as not a lot of information has been revealed on his character. The most improtant question is how Taejong will be portraited, as he is remembered for being a bloodthristy ruler who deposted and killed his brothers (he was the fifth-born out of six) to get the throne. We've seen Yoo Ah In play roles of missunderstood and kind rulers before, so it'll be very interesting to see if Six Flying Dragons will play out Taejong the way he was or if they'll tone down on his bloodthirsty-edgy personality.

Personally, I hope they'll portrait him the way he was in real life, it will not only add complexity to the story, it will also make the romance more interesting as I'll question Shin Se Kyung's character for falling in love with a cruel and bloodthristy man. I don't know, I think I'm just tired of seeing sweet and nice roles. Give me some cruelty and evil laughs! xD I guess we'll have to wait and see. The drama is set to start airing on October 5th.

What do you guys think? Are you excited for this drama? Would you want Yoo Ah In to portrait a nice king or a bloodthirsty one? Leave a comment below and let me know :3

[NEWS] Fanmade Videos of the Korean Drama 'Shut Up Flower Boy Band'

So yeah ~
I might just be a tiny bit obsessed with this drama. I found some pretty awesome videos on youtube and I thought I should share them. Don't worry about spoilers! I've looked through the videos and they don't bring up any new information or spoilers that I haven't already gone through in my recap of Episode 1. So if you've read my recap, you pretty much have seen the scenes in the video xD
The video is a fanmade trailer to the drama, and for some reason, I can't stop re-watching it. There is just something about it. It gives me feels, the song fits the scenes so well and the bromance is just lovely. The video is so upbeat and at the same time it gives of a hint of sadness. They've already touched the subject of the rich vs the poor in the first episode and you can definitely feel something connect to it in the lyrics. Or maybe that's just me. "A place that we call home" I dunno, I feel like Eyecandy are lost and are still trying to find themselves, their dreams and where they belong. So yeah ~ Since I'm slowly working on the recap and analysis of episode 2, I thought that you guys could enjoy these little videos in the meantime ^^

Attention! The trailer itself doesn't contain spoilers. However, I can't say the same about the comments section. So if you haven't seen episodes 2 and onwards, I wouldn't recommend to look below the video. You might find some pretty big spoilers in the comments! I don't want any viewers dying from heartattacks because they got spoiled ._. spoilers are the enemies of this planet! X_X

Fanmade Trailer

And some L (Hyun Soo) overload of hottness ~ because L is just pure smexy xD

Warning for nosebleeds and ovaries exploding. Watch at own risk. He is very handsome. You have been warned!

I don't own the videos by the way. All the rights and credits belong to the owners. I'll just die from feels and be amazed at his/her awesome video-editing skills, because I'm very lacking in that aspect xD

I'll be doing all kinds of rating polls each month and then announce the result and the winner in a similar post like this one. It will be in a top 3 countdown where I present the winner last. So, without further ado, let me present to you, the result:

The drama that came in third place, with 14% of the votes is She was Pretty
With 19% of the votes, I'm Sorry, I love You came in second place and finally:

The winner this month, that recieved a total of 59% of the votes is ~

Since D-Day won, it will be the drama I will recap and analyze episode by episode for the month of September. As for the other two dramas, they will not be thrown away and forgotten. Since they did get quite a lot of votes, and since I plan on watching them too, I will post a review of both of them once they've finished airing.

Once again, thank you all for voting! I hope you had fun, because I had super fun making this xD If your drama didn't win, I'm sorry, but I hope the review will make you feel a bit better. Please look forward to the next poll that will be up sometime in the middle of September.

This will most definitely be me as soon as D-Day starts to air....

I regret nothing xD
